• Penetrating Trauma
– The unintended and most undesirable outcome
of an impact munitions is penetration.
• Penetration from a SIM may result from a
combination of the following.
– Kinetic Energy - weight, size, shape, and
velocity.
– Target distance, subject’s weight, mass, and
clothing.
– Impact area on the body.
General Considerations for SIM’s
• Distance
– Projectile Performance
• As distance to the target increases, accuracy
decreases.
• As the distance increases - velocity decreases, thus
kinetic energy and the delivered force decreases.
• Will the munitions used be effective and produce the
desired results?
• effective accuracy and energy is greatly dependant
on the projectile type and design.
